MIT’s student disciplinary process continues to handle complaints against students related to campus tensions. The Institute Discrimination and Harassment Response (IDHR) office, Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS), and the Committee on Discipline (COD) will continue to review reports of both individual and organizational misconduct promptly and fairly, and work with other offices as necessary. If the COD determines a student or organization is ultimately found responsible for a policy violation, it has the authority to impose any sanction it deems appropriate. For instance, individual students might receive disciplinary warning, probation, or suspension. A student organization could receive disciplinary warning, probation, or suspension of recognition, or revocation of recognition. Additional sanctions may be imposed such as removal from or restriction of activities, suspension of organizational activities, and educational sanctions as the COD deems appropriate.

It is important for the community to know that the administration reserves the right to take any action it deems necessary or appropriate to protect the intellectual integrity, health, safety, wellbeing, or educational or working experience of the campus. This can include a range of interim measures to address a problem immediately, while the COD takes time to formally review a complaint.

Some of the most common examples of interim measures include temporary removal of a student from MIT housing or relocation to another room or residence hall, restrictions on student organization or residence hall activities, no-contact orders, restriction on a student’s access to certain campus locations, or changes to academic or work schedules. An interim measure immediately addresses a problem and can remain in effect until the administration is satisfied the problem has been resolved satisfactorily. Failing to adhere to the measure can be considered an aggravating circumstance in the COD’s disciplinary deliberations.
